About GeoGnos
GeoGnos is an open-source reference engine designed to democratize access to the world’s geographical, political, economic, and statistical data. We bridge the gap between complex raw data and human understanding through a modern, high-performance interface.
History & Revival
GeoGnos was originally created as a passion project born out of a love for Geography in 2010. As one of the first 1,000 applications hosted on the Google App Engine, it quickly gained traction and praise for its advanced mapping features.
Despite its initial success, the project entered a long period of dormancy while the CIA World Factbook remained the dominant source for global statistics. However, the landscape has changed.
With the sunsetting of the World Factbook as we knew it, a void was left in the open internet. Users who relied on that accessible, static data found themselves without a modern equivalent. We felt the pain of students, researchers, and developers left behind.
In response, we decided to revive GeoGnos. We have rebuilt the platform from the ground up to serve as the modern spiritual successor—powering it with bleeding-edge web technologies to deliver the speed and experience today’s users deserve.
Our Mission
Our goal is to replace traditional, static almanacs with a dynamic platform. We leverage the latest web technologies to deliver data that is:
- Instant: No page reloads, just data.
- Searchable: Find any metric for any country in milliseconds.
- Comparable: Context-aware comparisons / rankings between nations.
Roadmap
GeoGnos is an evolving platform. We are actively working on the following features to turn raw data into actionable insights:
- Offline-First PWA: Transforming GeoGnos into a fully installable Progressive Web App (PWA) that works without an internet connection, effectively becoming a permanent pocket almanac on your device.
- Expanded Data Sets: Integrating real-time economic indicators, climate data, and historical timelines.
- Deep Visualizations: Interactive charts for GDP trends, population demographics, and trade relationships.
- Educational Tools: Gamified geography quizzes and flashcards to help students master world knowledge.
- Atlas Mode: High-fidelity, interactive vector maps with regional drilling capabilities.
- Developer API: A public API to allow other developers to build tools on top of our cleaned and normalized datasets.
Data Sources & Accuracy
Our data is aggregated and normalized from the world’s most trusted open repositories. We are committed to maintaining the highest level of accuracy by refreshing our datasets as frequently as possible.
Primary Sources:
- The World Factbook (Archives & Mirrors)
- International Monetary Fund (IMF)
- The World Bank
- United Nations (UN) Data
Note: While we strive for accuracy, GeoGnos is a reference tool. We encourage users to verify critical information with primary source documents.
Technology Stack
GeoGnos is built for performance. We utilize a modern, serverless stack to ensure global availability and low latency:
- Frontend: SvelteKit v2+ & Svelte v5 (Runes)
- Styling: Tailwind CSS v4
- Infrastructure: Cloudflare Workers
