“Bulgaria's Spiritual Heart”

UNESCO World Heritage siteRecognizable architectural landmark

Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's most significant cultural and spiritual hub, offering an unparalleled study of Eastern Orthodox architecture and Bulgarian National Revival art. Founded in the 10th century by Saint John of Rila, it played a crucial role in preserving Bulgarian literature and national identity during five centuries of Ottoman rule. The intricate frescoes and striking zebra-striped arches are a masterclass in religious art. The best season to visit is late spring to early autumn, when the surrounding Rila Mountains are accessible and lush. Tourist tip: Dress modestly as it is an active monastery, and do not leave without trying the traditional 'mekitsi' (fried dough) sold just outside the complex gates.
