“The New Jerusalem of Africa”
UNESCO World Heritage siteRecognizable architectural landmark
Carved entirely out of single blocks of red volcanic tuff in the 12th century, Lalibela's 11 monolithic churches represent a pinnacle of Ethiopian architectural and religious history. Built by King Lalibela to create a 'New Jerusalem,' this site is essential for understanding Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. It is an active pilgrimage site, making it culturally vibrant today. The best time to visit is from October to March, particularly around the Timkat (Epiphany) festival in January. Tip: Wear slip-on shoes, as you must remove them before entering each church.
