โ€œMonument to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Tradeโ€

UNESCO World Heritage siteHistoric facades

Cape Coast Castle is one of the most profound places to study the dark history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Originally built by the Swedes in 1653 for the timber and gold trade, it was later used by the British to hold enslaved Africans before they were shipped across the Atlantic. Walking through the infamous 'Door of No Return' offers an emotional, visceral connection to history. Best season to visit is between November and March when the weather is drier. Tourist tip: Hire an official local guide at the entrance; their storytelling and historical context are essential for fully grasping the gravity of the site.
