Thaba Bosiu is a sandstone plateau of unparalleled historical and cultural importance. It served as the impregnable fortress of King Moshoeshoe I in the 19th century, allowing him to protect his people during the devastating Lifaqane wars and found the Basotho nation. Students of African history will find its strategic topography and the royal graveyard highly educational. The best time to visit is during the mild spring (September to November) or autumn. Tourist tip: Hire a local guide at the cultural village at the base to hear the rich legends of the mountain growing taller at night to thwart enemies.
