“The Jewel of Roman Africa”

UNESCO World Heritage siteArchaeological site

Widely considered one of the most spectacular and unspoiled Roman ruins in the Mediterranean, Leptis Magna was greatly expanded by its native son, Emperor Septimius Severus. Students of classical architecture will marvel at the Severan Arch, the vast basilica, and the remarkably preserved amphitheater. Historically, it represents the zenith of Roman urban planning and imperial power in North Africa. The best time to visit is during the mild spring or autumn months. Tourist tip: Hire a local guide to fully appreciate the site's vast scale, and bring plenty of water as shade is scarce.
