“Gateway to the Desert”
UNESCO World Heritage siteRecognizable architectural landmark
Known as the 'Gateway to the Desert,' Agadez is an essential stop for students of African history and architecture. The 15th-century city is famed for its stunning mud-brick architecture, notably the towering 27-meter minaret of the Grand Mosque, the tallest earthen structure of its kind. Historically, it was a pivotal crossroads for trans-Saharan camel caravans trading salt, gold, and manuscripts. The best season to visit is between November and February when the weather is more temperate. Tourist tip: Hire a certified local Tuareg guide for rich cultural context and to navigate the ancient, labyrinthine alleys safely.
