“The Jerusalem of the Balkans”
UNESCO World Heritage siteWater feature
One of the oldest human settlements in Europe, Ohrid is a dual UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for both its immense cultural history and unique natural biodiversity. Known as the cradle of Slavic literacy where St. Clement founded the first Slavic university, the town boasts ancient churches (once 365, one for every day of the year), Roman amphitheatres, and medieval fortresses. The best time to visit is summer (June-August) to enjoy swimming in the pristine tectonic lake. Tourist tip: Walk up the cobblestone streets to the Church of St. John at Kaneo for an unforgettable sunset view over the water.
