“The Mother Church of Serbian Orthodoxy”

UNESCO World Heritage siteRecognizable architectural landmark

Established in the late 12th century by Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serbian state, Studenica is the largest and richest of Serbia's Orthodox monasteries. For students of art and history, its priceless collection of 13th- and 14th-century Byzantine frescoes is a masterpiece of medieval European art. It represents the pinnacle of the Raška architectural school, blending Romanesque and Byzantine styles. The best season to visit is late spring or early autumn, offering mild weather to explore the surrounding biosphere. Tourist tip: Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and take time to visit the treasury, which houses relics of the Nemanjić dynasty.
