Located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, this temple houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. It is of immense cultural and historical importance, as the relic has played a profound role in local politics since ancient times—whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. For students of religion and history, it offers a living masterclass in Theravada Buddhist traditions. The best time to visit is during July or August to witness the spectacular Esala Perahera festival. Tourist Tip: Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and be prepared to remove your shoes before entering.
